Fave Fics Friday: Become Revered, You Will by pange

3 Jun

Last December, there was a LiveJournal community called Make the YuleTwi’d Gay in which people could request stories and authors would write them as a holiday gift.  I requested Geekward and/or Geeksper somehow involving Star Wars cupcakes and lemony goodness.

Pange accepted my challenge and came through with her one-shot titled Become Revered, You Will.  I love it.  Thank you, Pange!  Come on, who doesn’t love a little geekiness, cupcakes decorated like Star Wars characters, Jasper quoting C3PO, and make-up sex?

Fave Fics Friday: Just One of the Guys by SorceressCirce

27 May

Generally, if I’m going read Edward/Bella, one of them must be a vampire.   Every now and then there’s an exception, and I’ll read an AH Edward/Bella.  Just One of the Guys by SorceressCirce is one of those exceptions.

Bella and her best friend Jasper are gaming geeks.  Jasper meets Alice and Alice introduces her brother Edward to Bella.  Both Edward and Bella claim they “don’t date.”

Bella has some violence in her past, which SorceressCirce has handled beautifully by providing an “alternate” chapter to read if you’re a wuss like me.  You still get the gist of Bella’s past without so much of the gory details.  (caveat: I haven’t read the “official” chapter, so I don’t know how many gory details there actually are.)

There are many sweet moments between Edward and Bella in this fic that made me squee and swoon.  Sometimes it’s nice to take a break from Edward/Jasper fics.  😉

Outtakes and alternative POVs are posted here: More of the Guys.

Fave Fics Friday: Seven Minutes in Heaven by Tuesday Midnight

20 May

I was hooked from the beginning of Seven Minutes in Heaven by Tuesday Midnight.   High school Edward and Jasper.   Secretly attracted to each other Edward and Jasper.   Alone in a dark closet for seven minutes while their friends waited in the room outside Edward and Jasper.  Horny Edward and Jasper.

Yeah, that pretty much has my name written all over it.

The story starts with the boys in high school and goes through their college years.  It also has one of my favorite Edward/Jasper scenes: Jasper gets to play knight-in-shining-armor and save Edward from himself.  I may have swooned.

Seven Minutes in Heaven is complete, and Tuesday Midnight has also written a few chapters of Jasper POV here in Seven More Minutes.

Fave Fics Friday: Over The Top by starfish422

13 May

Over The Top by starfish422 is this week’s Fave Fics Friday.  As the first strictly Edward/Jasper fic I read, it remains one of my favorites that I re-read from time to time.  This story has sweetness, lemons, angst, and love.  What more could you ask for?

One of the things I like about her story is that it’s not just Edward and Jasper — there are several minor characters in their lives, too.  Most of them are original characters, and they aren’t just placeholders, either.  They have personalities and backstories.

Who Do You Write Like?

10 May

A friend of mine shared this website: I Write Like.  I had a bit of fun pasting in writing from different stories.

The first time, I submitted this sample from Missing Him:

The sick feeling in Edward’s stomach spread to the rest of his body as he watched Jasper wrap his arms around the other man’s waist.

 Jasper had moved on.

The briefest flicker of softness crossing Jasper’s face was the only thing that kept Edward from throwing up all over the shoes of Jasper’s…boyfriend.  He was desperate for any hope, any chance he might have Jasper back, no matter how minute.

The silence stretched between them.  Jasper simply looked at Edward.  Edward studied Jasper’s eyes, looking for any sign of forgiveness.  Mr. Bodyguard glanced at Jasper, but before he could say anything, Jasper finally spoke.

“What are you doing here?” was all he said.  His voice was flat. No emotion.

“I had to find you.  Can we go somewhere?  To talk?”

He sighed.  “There’s nothing to talk about, Edward.”

and the result was Stephenie Meyer.  I have to wonder how much of that is because of the character names of Edward and Jasper.

Next, I submitted a sample from this blog posting and got Cory Doctorow.

I tried a sample of fan fiction again. This time, from my first fan fiction story where I was writing in canon:

The rainbows that refracted off the hard surface of my skin lit up the clear skin of her cheeks, stirring my emotions in ways I never imagined.  Her eyes widened ever so slightly and her lips parted as her jaw slowly dropped a fraction of an inch.  But there didn’t seem to be any fear or horror in her expression.  It was…wonder?  Fascination?

My spirits soared to new heights with the very thought that she might still want me, even seeing me for what I am, so much so that it was nearly impossible for me to continue to control my slower-than-human pace.  The overwhelming desire to be at her side and stroke her cheek, touch her hair –  No.  Just sitting next to her, to have her not run in fear from me, would be enough.  It must be enough.

I wasn’t surprised to get Stephenie Meyer again.  In fact, I was happy, because I was trying to write to her style. (I never published the story online.)

Next, I tried a sample from a work-in-progress (unedited).  The only character name mentioned is Peter, so it’s not obviously Twilight fan fiction at first glance.  (note: some mature content)

The taller man turned away and ordered a drink from the bartender, completely ignoring his companion.  He glanced at Peter and rolled his eyes, tilting his head towards the boy.  He tossed back his drink.

The boy didn’t seem to notice, or care, that he was being ignored.  “I mean, can you imagine the –”

“Look,” the other man said, finally looking at him, “the only research you’ll be doing tonight is finding out how much of my dick fits down your throat, got it?”

The boy shut his mouth and nodded meekly.  Peter thought he saw him shudder slightly, but the lighting wasn’t good so he couldn’t be sure.

“C’mon.  Let’s dance.”

The boy let himself be pulled to the dance floor, following like a puppy dog.  Peter wondered if he should have stepped in, done something.  He watched the couple weave their way to an opening.  They began moving to the beat of the music.  The older one had his hands all over the boy who seemed to be enjoying himself.

Peter turned back to the bar and signaled the bartender.  None of my business, he told himself.  He ordered a tall draft, something to drink slowly and savor as he contemplated the path his life had taken.

This time, the website said I write like Dan Brown.  I’ve never actually read any of his work, but at least I’ve heard of him.

Finally I picked a different section of the same work-in-progress story.  I’m not going to post the sample as it definitely falls under the “mature content” heading, is unedited, and I just don’t think it’s very good.  The result this time was P. G. Wodehouse.

So, four different writers (though I’m not surprised to get a different writer for a blog post vs. creative writing), including two different writers for the same story.  It’s a fun toy to play with, but I wonder if the results really mean anything at all.

Fave Fics Friday: You’ve Kept Me Waiting by Mandi1

6 May

I’m going canon with this week’s Fave Fics Friday!

When I read the Twilight saga the first time, I fell in love with Edward.  The other characters were okay, but Edward was by far my favorite.  The rest (including Bella) were just supporting actors.  Even once I started shipping Edward and Jasper, Jasper was merely a hot blond guy to pair up with Edward.

You’ve Kept Me Waiting by Mandi1 changed that.  Her story is written from Alice’s point of view, and covers the time from when she met Jasper to when they found the Cullens.  After reading this story, I fell in love with Jasper.  Canon Jasper, no less — who until this point had just been the scary Cullen brother with poor control. An outsider.  Because there’s so little of Jasper in the original books, his character is open to interpretation.  His history is fascinating and full of holes.  In other words, lots of room for potential while still keeping it “canon.”

Since reading You’ve Kept Me Waiting, I’ve loved Jasper as much as Edward (maybe even more so?), though I love each in different ways and for different reasons.  Jasper is no longer just a hot body next to Edward.  I find myself writing from his point of view more often now and considering which aspects of his personality and past can be brought into an all-human story.

Thank you, Mandi1, for opening my eyes to the potential of Jasper.

(Note: I think there are some parts of You’ve Kept Me Waiting that no longer fit into canon based on new information we know about Jasper and his past, but at the time it was written, it fit.)

Fave Fic Fridays: Just The Three Of Us by kuntrygal

29 Apr

For my first Fave Fic Friday, I talked about the first fic I read, Only Human by Amythest Jackson.  Last week, it was my current favorite, Eye Candy by Whitlock-Masen.    This week, I’m turning the clock back to my Edward/Jasper beginnings.

Just The Three Of Us
by kuntrygal was the first Edward/Jasper story I read.  Okay, it’s an Edward/Jasper/Bella threesome fic, but it was the Edward/Jasper part of her summary that intrigued me:

“Jasper and I are kind of together. We don’t show it outside of the privacy of our home.”  I was almost pleading with her to understand.  “Bella love, please.” I said holding a hand out to her. “We do want you…we both want you.”

This story will always have a soft spot in my heart for introducing me to the hotness that is Edward/Jasper.  Cheers, kuntrygal.  Who would have guessed your story would start such an obsession?  😉

Picspiration: Unseen Scars

25 Apr

LostImmortal makes really great Edward/Jasper manipulated images.  I saw this one and it made me think of my Unseen Scars boys.  Edward is so determined to get Jasper back, and Jasper is so conflicted about what he should do.

Fave Fics Friday: Eye Candy by Whitlock-Masen

22 Apr

For this week’s Fave Fics Friday, I’m going with the story that’s currently rocking my world:  Eye Candy by Whitlock-Masen.  Whitlock-Masen is actually a team of two writers, Naelany and SorceressCirce.  This story is written in daily 100-word drabbles and it’s going for the whole year.  Three hundred sixty-five yummy chapters of candy-making Jasper and his new boyfriend, Edward.  A story written in drabbles is a little different than a standard chapter-story; there’s more left to the imagination.  Still, it’s amazing how much these authors can say in just a few words.  It might sound easy to write drabbles, but it really isn’t!

Eye Candy updates every day, and I’ll be honest:  around 10:30 each morning I start stalking my inbox looking for the update.  If it’s delayed or I don’t get a chance to read it right away, my whole morning feels off.  😉

Goal Reflection, One Week Later

21 Apr

It’s been one week since I started this blog and set the goal to spend at least one hour on my writing five days a week.

How did I do?

Well, I’m not sure, to be honest.  I know I spent more than five hours writing this week, but I don’t know if it was over five days.  And that’s really the key, isn’t it?  To make writing a priority in my life so that I devote time to it five days a week?  Of course I have the standard excuses: “Well, this was Spring Break week so my schedule was out of whack”, “I’ve been unusually tired this week”, yadda, yadda, yadda.

Coming up with excuses is completely counter to my whole reason for setting the goal.  Instead of fitting in my writing each day, I need to plan for it.  Whether it’s at midnight or 10 A.M. — or maybe half an hour at both times — it doesn’t matter.  What matters is scheduling at least five days of writing a week and then doing it.

What I also need to do is track my efforts.  After all, how will I know I’m meeting my goal if I don’t have any record?  Even something as simple as a check mark on the calendar to say “I did my 60 minutes of writing” on this day.

So what have I spent my time on this week?  I began the week plotting Unseen Scars and that led me to really wondering about the antagonist’s  character.  Which led me to thinking about what he’d be doing after the story’s end.  Which led me to planning an epilogue for Unseen Scars.  Which led me to write an outtake for Unseen Scars that filled in some of the time between the last chapter and the epilogue.  Which led me to consider a sequel to Unseen Scars.

Have I mentioned that I haven’t even finished plotting Unseen Scars yet, let alone written a single chapter yet?  And  I’m already thinking about — and writing — outtakes and sequels?

*sigh*

But isn’t it wonderful when things just start to come together?  When the characters just take off on their own?  I now have a much clearer sense as to who this character is, why he acts the way he does, and how he will be defeated.  When that happens, it’s easy to remember that I actually do love to write.
